As with every clinical trial, the HEALEY ALS Platform Trial involves certain inclusion and exclusion criteria that must be considered prior to participation. Have you been diagnosed with ALS?

Participants in this trial must have been diagnosed with clinically possible, probable, lab-supported probable, or definite sporadic or familial ALS. Patients diagnosed with other neurological diseases (such as PLS, PBP or MSA) or exclusively upper or lower MND are not eligible for the trial. If there is any uncertainty regarding your diagnosis, please consult your doctor to review this criterion.

Did you first begin experiencing ALS weakness symptoms within the last 24 months?

Please note that this question refers to time since onset of weakness symptoms due to ALS, not the time since diagnosis. "Weakness" is defined as the onset of muscle weakness (which typically begins on one side of the body, such as one arm or one leg) as well as changes in the character of the individual's voice (especially slurred words or slowness of speech). Fasciculations are a common first symptom of ALS but are not considered to be the onset of "muscle weakness" for the purposes of this study criterion. If there is any uncertainty regarding the month/year of your weakness onset due to ALS, please consult your doctor to review this criterion.

"Vital Capacity" is the greatest volume of air that can be expelled from the lungs after taking the deepest possible breath. The Vital Capacity test (typically referred to as either "Forced Vital Capacity" or "Slow Vital Capacity") requires patients to breathe through the mouthpiece of a device called a spirometer and serves as a measure of lung function. Participants must have the ability to swallow pills whole, not crushed, in order to be eligible to enroll in the Platform Trial. Certain investigational products being tested in the trial cannot be administered through a PEG or G-tube, and assignment to a drug regimen is random, so all participants must have the ability to swallow pills and liquids by mouth.
